Mission

The mission of the Greater Spokane Substance Abuse Council (GSSAC) is to reduce substance misuse and violence in the Spokane Region with statewide and national impact.

Purpose

The primary purpose of GSSAC is to support a strong collaborative coalition with broad and diverse community representation that promotes primary community-wide substance abuse/violence prevention and reduction strategies.

History

Organized in the fall of 1982, GSSAC was established as a community effort by business leaders, policymakers, and citizens to take a stand against drugs and violence. Certified as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with registered Articles of Incorporation and a 15-member Policy Board of Directors in February of 1983,  the coalition coordinates collaborative efforts to reduce the impact of misuse of alcohol, drug abuse, and violence in the Spokane area.

Today, GSSAC's Prevention Center is home to several coalition-based projects and programs working toward the prevention of substance abuse, violence, and impaired driving. GSSAC implements the Communities That Care risk and protective factor model to promote community-wide environments that foster positive attitudes and behaviors among youth and, in turn, adults. Multiple strategies at multi-levels unite and support the community with the common goal of creating safe and healthy environments for communities across our region.
